Welcome to the Fall, 2010 issue of our newsletter. We hope you find it interesting and useful. And remember, it’s for you and not for us, so if there’s something you would like to see, please let us know at info@geotech.com and we will try to include it in our next newsletter. Click here for previous newsletters.
This is a small tip, but can save you time if you do a lot of web browsing. You can quickly open a new browser window with Control-N. In Internet Explorer it will open a new window containing the page you are viewing. In Firefox it opens a new window with your startup page.
Here's another one. In any Enviro Data editing form (in fact in any Access form), if you are in a data field and the data is longer than the width of the field so you can't see it all, with the cursor in the field, press Shift-F2 (zoom). It will open a new window so you can see more or all of your data.
And one for the programmer types in the group. In Access, if you press Control-G, it brings up the Visual Basic editor and displays the immediate window, and you can enter commands directly. We think the G is for debuG. But who knows what Microsoft was thinking?
Let us know if you have any tips you would like to share.
Geotech is pleased to announce a new version of Enviro Data, called Enviro Data 2010. It has many new features that should be of great value to our clients. A number of these new features are related to our Field Tool. For example you can now create container labels based on the sample events that you create, and these labels can be coordinated with the chain of custody. You can print a work list, sample collection log, and purge record report. Field samples can be automatically logged into the Samples table in preparation for import and to help check completeness.
The Validation Tool has been revised and expanded. Control limits can now be imported from the lab data file. You can set up validation programs, such as CLP or ERPIMS, and choose which to use to validate your data set. Validation acceptance criteria can now be stored with analyses. Data can be compared to multiple acceptance criteria and apply the strictest control limit if desired. Holding times can now be applied by either parameter or method, and validation codes can be aliased.
A number of features have been added to Calculated Parameters, including more complex calculations for determining toxicity to create "dynamic" regulatory limits Regulatory limits can be enabled and disabled. Wellbore construction has been expanded considerably, and multiple intervals like several screened intervals are now easy. There is now an export for Rockworks 15, and imports and exports for ADR and Florida ADaPT, among others. A new color-coded Excel export can handle up to 12 regulatory limit types on one report, and can automatically add footnotes. We have highlighted some of these features in recent newsletters, and will continue to do so in the near future.
Sometimes it's important to show the data in just the right way. Enviro Data has a new report format that lets you specify the colors to use to display each parameter on the graph. You can use this to highlight particular parameters, or to ensure that the display is consistent regardless of the number of parameters displayed. The report can show up to four graphs on a page.

The Enviro Spase graph shares this capability.
Geotech can help you provide access to your Enviro Data information on your website. We have a set of tools that we can provide that you (or we) can help you implement to let users select and display data. After entering a user name and password, the user can select the data they want to see.

Then the software displays a table with the data they need.

To see this work, go to www.geotech.com/envirodataweb.htm, click on "Click here for an example implementation," and follow the instructions on the screen.
Geotech cooperates with our partner EnviroInsite (http://enviroinsite.com/) to help you easily display the data from Enviro Data. Use the Select Data form to choose the data that you want to see. Then you can export that data in a format that EnviroInsite can display. The following graphics show data from Enviro Data displayed in EnviroInsite.

Give our friend Bruce Jacobs at EnviroInsite a call at 617-879-0253 to discuss how his display tool can work with Enviro Data.
A graph is almost always the best way to view the changes in your data over time, and Enviro Data (and Enviro Spase) has a number of ways of doing this. The easiest is the on-screen graph in the Viewer, called up from the Select Data form. It can display multiple parameters for one location, or multiple locations for one parameter. In the 2010 release Geotech added a useful feature to the on-screen graph. Now when you click on a point on the graph, Enviro Data will display some additional information about that data point, such as the location, date, value, and units. It will also show any flags for that result using Enviro Data's flexible Value and Flag feature.

We encourage you to try this feature and let us know what you think.
Enviro Data now makes it easy to select the colors to use to display each parameter on selected Enviro Data output and in Enviro Spase. You use the Edit Parameters format that you are already familiar with, and select the color you want graphically. It's that easy.

Geotech is pleased to announce a new version of Enviro Spase, called Enviro Spase 2010. It has many new features that clients have been asking for. A big one is the ability to store the location of callout boxes after they have been drawn on the screen, and then to use those the next time you draw them. So if you have carefully positioned five hundred callout boxes on your E sized plot this quarter, next quarter they can be drawn where you want them. And you can have and use multiple offset types for various different maps.
Enviro Spase is keeping up with Enviro Data, and now uses the revised Enviro Data system for parameter colors. Also it is now possible in Enviro Data to associate colors with station groups, and then display the background colors of the various callouts using those colors, so if you want the boxes for shallow wells in one color and deep wells in another color, the software can do it automatically.
Several of the wizards have been rewritten to deal with missing and extra data, and now react better to data problems of various kinds. The StickLog Wizard has been modified to improve the legibility of the logs. The Graph Wizard now supports parameter colors for drawing the lines and labels.

For years now, Geotech has been helping countries around the world increase efficiency and save costs on their data management projects. With businesses ranging from consulting firms to paper mills, Enviro Data has been able to overcome international variances with ease. This can prove tricky sometimes, as other countries do not necessarily manage or display their data in the same way as the US does. The most recent addition to our international clients is an environmental consulting company in Argentina. We have been working with them integrating Spanish changes into our software and might soon begin converting Enviro Data to a “user friendly” Spanish version. We are also talking with companies in Mexico City about setting up resellers there, and the usage of Enviro Data in the Mexican market. We also hope to attend the CIEPEC Trade Show this year in Beijing, to learn more about the Asian market and possibly help them with their water remediation problems. With an ever expanding effort to reach companies around the world, Geotech is committed to cleaning up the environment one project at a time.
Geotech Computer Systems, Inc. once again attended the Soils, Sediments, Water and Energy conference from October 18th – 21st at the University of Massachusetts. Mike Rich, Geotech’s Sales Director, shared a booth with Geotech Environmental Equipment. A few of the exciting Presentation and Workshop titles this year included: “Sustainable Remediation: What is it and how is it applied?” and “In Situ Chemical Reduction for Groundwater Chromium Stabilization”. Mike met with many great people at the conference, which opened doors to many opportunities for Enviro software implementations and strategic partnerships. We are pleased that many of the attendees have a need for Enviro Data, and we are working with them to get it going.
For the first time, Geotech Computer Systems, Inc. attended the Renewable Energy Conference in Mexico City, Mexico. Organized by CO-EXist, Colorado Export of Innovative & Sustainable Technologies, this trade show and private meetings with Mexican technology companies, was an excellent way to introduce our Enviro software and services to them. Held at the World Trade Center, this conference had over 6,000 attendees of private sector, public sector, consulting companies, and government agencies. The Green Expo provided much information on the Mexican market and allowed Geotech to emerge as one of the top database companies to enter the environmental market in Mexico. Geotech had many discussions with potential distributors as they recognize that their environmental industry needs fresh tools, and Geotech can fill this technology need. We are excited that the ongoing conversations with the five technology companies Mike did presentations for, will allow us to establish our presence in the emerging Mexican environmental market.
A National Laboratory recently purchased Enviro Data, and is working with Geotech to expand the software to more comprehensively handle biological data. While Enviro Data has always satisfactorily handled tissue and other related data, the scientists at the lab want to better associate samples with a structured taxonomic system that they have developed over the years. Once this capability is integrated into Enviro Data, users will be able to select data using genus, species, and other taxonomic data.
Geotech has provided our Enviro Data and Enviro Spase software to EPA Region 8 to display data for the East Helena Superfund/RCRA site, formerly owned by ASARCO. The database was created by a long-time Enviro Data client, and is provided on a regular basis to EPA project managers, a regulator with the State of Montana, and other interested parties. The EPA PMs and others can then retrieve data and create displays as they need. They are making reports, graphs, and GIS maps to better understand the project, make better informed decisions, and provide key information to the public. Geotech is also working with other EPA regions to better manage and display their environmental data.
